Study on Terms that Refer to Elders

January 6, 2009 by ashipley

[Foundation - List of qualifications: 1 Tim 3:1-7 & Tit 1:5-9]

Study on Terms that Refer to Elders

Most of us hear and understand the qualifications of elders. But further, let's apply these qualifications to the position.. What an elder does with the position is equally as important as making sure one is qualified.

1. Elder (able to teach, not a novice, self-controlled, sober-minded, husband, blameless, temperate) indicates an older man with wisdom that can only come from age and experience.

1 Tim 5: 17 Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and doctrine. 18 For the Scripture says, “You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain,”[c] and, “The laborer is worthy of his wages.”[d] 19 Do not receive an accusation against an elder except from two or three witnesses. 20 Those who are sinning rebuke in the presence of all, that the rest also may fear.

2. Overseer (rules his own house well, exhort & convict those who contradict, not quarrelsome) indicates a position of top authority, in charge and makes all final decisions for the local congregation.

Acts 20: 28 Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God[c] which He purchased with His own blood. 29 For I know this, that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. 30 Also from among yourselves men will rise up, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves. 31 Therefore watch, and remember

3. Shepherd (hospitable, lover of what is good, not violent, not self-willed, gentle) is a metaphoric term that indicates the men are to show love, care, dedication and self sacrifice for the members.

1 Peter 5: 1 The elders who are among you I exhort, I who am a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that will be revealed: 2 Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly; 3 nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock; 4 and when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away.

4. Steward (steward of God, holding fast faithful word, not greedy, not given to wine, not covetous) indicates a man who can be trusted with great treasures such as the souls of the local church members and the church's financial assets.

Acts 11: 29 Then the disciples, each according to his ability, determined to send relief to the brethren dwelling in Judea. 30 This they also did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.

And finally,

The members' have responsibilities too. The responsibility of the eldership is not entirely on the elders.

1. Communicate your needs - Jas 5:14 "Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him.."

2. Obey & submit - Heb 13:17 esp. the latter part: "Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you." We should have the right attitude that will help the elders with their job, not cause them grief..

3. Do your part to grow future elders (women, exhort the men; men, grow with the qualifications in mind)

I really like Gary's application of 1 Timothy 5. Hadn't thought of that one. Thanks!

Different Standards of Modesty?

January 1, 2009 by ashipley

I've seen homes that seem to live by a different standard of modesty in their home as opposed to in public. Obviously, the different modesty standard in a marriage is a given.

But I'm talking about wearing attire around the house, around members of the opposite sex other than spouse (like older kids/siblings, parents..), that is understood would not be acceptable to wear in public.

So my question, is there a different standard of modesty? My understanding points to no. If you wouldn't wear it in public, should you be wearing around the house around members of the opposite sex? God has given us a standard (1 Pet 3:1-6;1 Tim 2:9-10;Rev 16:15;Isa 37:2-3;Ex 20:26;Ex 28:42), and has made no distinction between home and public in that regard.

I'd like to hear your own thoughts and your application of scripture.

Great outline. You organized it the same way I do :)

I especially like the "light & darkness" "cannot be yoked" point.

Yah, I've said before you have to take it with a grain of salt. But then, you should never let your guard down on how people interpret the Bible whether its a Christian or not. Still good thoughts

QuietWalk Daily E-Devotional

December 16, 2008 by ashipley

http://www.crosswalk.com/devotionals/quiet_walk/

1 John 3

Those who say they love God must manifest that love by loving others.

INSIGHT

The final test of Christian character is action, not words. It is not what you say that determines your life message, but what you do. John writes: "Let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth" (v. 18). Consistency is one of the great challenges of the Christian walk. Whenever our actions do not match our words, the message of our actions always overrides the message of our words. Therein lies the basis for one of the most consistent complaints against Christianity over the ages: hypocrisy.

PRAYER

Praise God for loving you unconditionally and giving you the capacity to love others:
Vindicate me, O Lord,
For I have walked in my integrity.
I have also trusted in the Lord;
I shall not slip.
Examine me, O Lord, and prove me;
Try my mind and my heart.
For Your lovingkindness is before my eyes,
And I have walked in Your truth.
I have not sat with idolatrous mortals,
Nor will I go in with hypocrites. . . .
My foot stands in an even place;
In the congregations I will bless the Lord (Psalm 26:1-4, 12).

Pause for praise and thanksgiving.

Pray this confession to the Lord as you seek to keep your life free from sin:
"Let all Your enemies perish, O Lord!
But let those who love Him be like the sun
When it comes out in full strength"(Judges 5:31).

Confess any sins that the Holy Spirit brings to your mind, and pray this affirmation to the Lord:
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? . . . Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
(Romans 8:35, 37-39)

As you make your requests known to the Lord, include:
consistent, loving actions,
complete honesty at all times,
your activities for the day.

Finally, offer this prayer to the Lord:
Ascribe greatness to our God.
He is the Rock, His work is perfect;
For all His ways are justice,
A God of truth and without injustice;
Righteous and upright is He(Deuteronomy 32:3-4).

Re: Making the Time to Study

For me, I like to get sermon CDs and listen to them on my way to and from work and school. Sometimes I listen to the sermon more than once over a few days to really think about what's being said.

Also, I sign up for a daily email with a passage to read straight from the Bible followed by a thought to go with the passage and a some thoughts for prayer.

To continue the thought of Jerry Fites lesson Sunday Night.. I wanted to get us all to share what times you personally find are best for studying.

It is encouraging to see fellow brethren making the time to study God's Word.

That's a good way to look at the Christian perspective of politics. Well, now we will need to continue praying for the future of this country under Mr. Obama. Trust in God and His plan.

Gospel Music on Radio

October 22, 2008 by ashipley

What are people's beliefs (according to the scripture) on listening to gospel music on the radio (separate from the worship assembly)? I had a co-worker ask me this and I wanted to see what others would have to say about it.

Re: Saying, "Thank you Jesus"

October 22, 2008 by ashipley

Ryan and I were talking about this. To us, it's not so much would we condemn it (probably not) but is it really appropriate? I guess this kind of goes along the same lines as my question on saying "goodness"..

Look at instances in the Bible where we see people truly thanking God for blessings in their life, does it include a red light turning green? Yes, we are always to be thankful, but it's kind of like praying to God for a new car. That's just how I see it.

If anyone feels differently, please share!

Using "Oh My Goodness", Okay?

October 15, 2008 by ashipley

A very, very common term used, I think, very flippantly is "Oh my Goodness". I get the idea a lot of Christians don't see a problem with it since so many use it. But, it's always bothered me since about 8 years ago that someone told me that "goodness" is a synonym for God and is wrong to use.

So, is using "goodness" taking the Lords name in vain?

Here is a list of euphemisms I found, which include "goodness" at http://www.topical-bible-studies.org/21-0008.htm

"A list of English euphemisms that swear, curse, or take God's name in vain.

Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary:

"euphemism ... the substitution of an agreeable or inoffensive expression for one that may offend or suggest something unpleasant; also : the expression so substituted."

Ephesians 4:29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. 30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

The following list was compiled using Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary, Webster's New World College Dictionary, Roget's International Thesaurus, Rodale's Synonym Finder, and other references.

Euphemisms for God:

ga

gad

gadfrey

gawd

godfrey

gol

golly

good God

good gracious

good grief

good Lord

goodness

goodness gracious

goodness me

good night

gosh

gracious

great Scott

od

odd..."

I also did not realize "good grief" was considered a euphemism! It's easy to forget to be careful about what we are saying, but we will give an account.

The right way to use "goodness":

Psalm 25:7 Do not remember the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions;According to Your mercy remember me, For Your goodness’ sake, O LORD.

Daily E-Devotional

October 13, 2008 by ashipley

Just wanted to share this Daily E-Devotional email I have signed up for. I've been signed up for a few weeks now, and I really enjoy the passage/thought of the day and daily prayer help. Obviously, it is not a work of the church, so you will need to watch out for fallacies in the short, man-authored paragraph (though we should always be testing man's words to the scripture rather than accepting them blindly, Christian or not), but the rest come straight from God's word without commentary.  Here is what one looks like:

2 Corinthians 4

Man's evident weakness presents an opportunity for God to manifest His power.

INSIGHT

When we look at Israel and the Mosaic Law, we tend to think that the Jews performed poorly. All they had to do was be obedient to some basic laws, and God would bless them beyond measure. Yet they might say the same about us. With the Holy Spirit living in us, we have only to live in love toward God and man and God will bless us spiritually beyond measure. While human frailty is glaring in both systems, the work of God is being accomplished nevertheless. God's message is carried in "jars of clay" so that in eternity the glory of the redeemed will go to God and not to man.

PRAYER

Offer your praise to the Lord as an expression of the gratefulness of your heart:
I will extol You, my God, O King;
And I will bless Your name forever and ever.
Every day I will bless You,
And I will praise Your name forever and ever.
Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised;
And His greatness is unsearchable.
One generation shall praise Your works to another,
And shall declare Your mighty acts.
I will meditate on the glorious splendor of Your majesty,
And on Your wondrous works. (Psalm 145:1-5)

Pause for praise and thanksgiving.

Now pray this confession to the Lord as you seek to keep your life free from sin and in fellowship with Him:
Who can understand his errors?
Cleanse me from secret faults.
Keep back Your servant also from presumptuous sins;
Let them not have dominion over me.
Then I shall be blameless,
And I shall be innocent of great
transgression. (Psalm 19:12-13)

Confess any sins that the Holy Spirit brings to your mind, and pray this affirmation to the Lord:
Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
(Romans 6:11)

As you make your requests known to the Lord, include:

  • The Lord's leading in your life
  • Opportunities for evangelism
  • Whatever else is on your heart

Finally, offer this prayer to the Lord:
Oh, satisfy us early with Your mercy,
That we may rejoice and be glad all our days! (Psalm 90:14)
